Deja vu once again for the Kickers as Fever smash them for 4
Seoul Fever did the double over rivals the Kimchi Kickers as they recorded their second 4-0 victory of the season over their opponents.
From start to finish Fever were comfortable and in control, building attacks patiently from the back, passing moving and working hard for each other from the get go. Dan Argueta was playing up front, a position Fever are now short of options in due to De Vos and Kelechenko’s departure from the squad, but he was showing the same tenacity and desire as he does week in week out at centre back. He was partnered by Filip Pusnik, back in form and full fitness, with Garthwaite and Fannin in the centre of the park, with Pallos Levente and Sebastian Auger occupying the wide births. Greg Cross and David Pegg played as wing backs, with Dan Lappin and the returning Jaemin Kim at centre back. Andrew Ritchie was in between the sticks but barely touched the ball as Fever held a high defensive line and kept the ball in their opponents half.
Playing on a large pitch, the Fever midfield were finding acres of space, especially Auger on the left, as he was repeatedly used as an outlet to begin attacks, skipping past his opponents with ease, combining effectively with Garthwaite and Cross in particular. Garthwaite was the first to come close as he fired an effort against the post from a tight angle, but Fever didn’t have to wait long to make the breakthrough. It was Garthwaite who burst from midfield striking a crisp effort with power and precision, only to see it ricochet off the right post, across the goal mouth and into the path of the mercurial Pallos Levente to tap home the easiest of his five goals this season. 1-0 Fever.
Fever refused to rest on the laurels and upped the pressure, helped by the return to form of Greg Cross who was displaying his trademark runs as well as improved distribution, linking up well with Auger and Levente. Jaemin Kim, more accustomed to playing centre midfield, and the ever reliable Lappin were spreading the play well and formed a solid base from which to build attacks. Although they were in control of the game, they couldn’t add to their advantage, and the first period finished 1-0.
The second period was probably the best period of football Fever have played, as they finally began to play with the ball on the ground which suited playmaker Sebastian Auger down to the ground as he was becoming more and more influential. Fever could tell they had a player in form with all the play going through Auger who was combining with Garthwaite and Fannin, playing sumptuous one-two’s and breezing past players as if they weren’t there. Kimchi Kickers began to deploy rough tactics, first on Auger, who was now being targeted with kicks for the remainder of the game, and Fannin. Auger lost his cool and sythed down an opponent who was frequently fouling him, only to receive a yellow card and subsequently had to be careful for the duration of the game. After one of KK’s rare attacks broke down, Fever took the opportunity to pounce. After a swift break, Levente pulled the ball across goal to Pusnik who after debating whether to shoot himself, picked out Auger who was better placed. After cutting inside a defender and onto his stronger right foot he blasted a shot past the despairing keeper to increase Fevers lead. 2-0 Fever.
There was more to come in this half as makeshift striker Argueta was about to get amongst the goals. It was Auger with the corner kick, a dangerous out-swinger that after a deflection, found its way to Argueta who headed home his first, and Fevers third of the day, and it remained that way in the second half. 3-0 Fever.
Manager Byrne used the 3rd period to ring the changes, bringing on Alex Walsh for his first appearance of the season, as well as Paul Jones who joined him at centre back. Kevin Kim also came on for Levente on the left to inject some pace into the attack and punish some weary KK legs. Shane Reagan was also introduced and looked lively making runs down the right as KK gave in and it became like a game of attack and defend – a predicament Fever found themselves on the receiving end of against Phoenix the previous week. Refusing to take their foot off the gas, Fever began the 3rd period like a train, with Pusnik taking on the whole KK team himself straight from the kick off. Hungry to get amongst the goals himself he surged forward, cleanly beating a few players for pace before stumbling through a couple of challenges and finding himself only having to beat one more opponent to get through on goal, but this last hurdle proved too much but he won a corner to maintain early pressure. It was a matter of time before Fever added to their lead, and it was Gareth Fallin who obliged with a delightful curling effort from 20 yards which deceived the keeper and flew over him and into the back of the net. 4-0 Fever. This seemed to spark Fallin’s thirst for goals as a few moments later he surged into the box, only to be hauled down, with the referee awarding a penalty. He dusted himself down and stepped up to take the penalty, but screwed it wide.
Fever will be glad to have quickly erased the bitter defeat to Phoenix and will look to beat the Russians next week for real, after they were awarded the victory even though they lost on the day, due to them fielding an ineligible player.
After controlling the game and putting in an energetic display, Sebastian Auger was awarded the Man of the Match. He later went on to say “get the ball on the ground and get it to me as often as you did today and I’ll produce that every week”. What an egotistic cheeky bastard ;)
